The cornerstone of the Flood Strategy is the proposal to raise Warragamba Dam by around 14 metres for flood mitigation. This was selected by an expert taskforce as the most effective and efficient infrastructure option to reduce the significant risks to people’s lives and property from regional flooding in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley. It will provide flood mitigation through the temporary storage and controlled release of floodwaters.
With a 14-metre Warragamba Dam raising, flood damages would be reduced on average by 75% per annum. This is as a result of the most damaging floods no longer impacting homes and other infrastructure downstream.
WaterNSW, the dam owner and operator, has started the environmental assessment for this proposal. The WaterNSW project team has been out and about talking to people across the valley about the project and the environmental assessment process.
