BEYOND THE ASSEMBLY POINT: EMERGENCY TRAINING FOR CHILDCARE SERVICES

A series of workshops delivered by the Australian Red Cross has strengthened the ability of children’s services in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley to plan for natural disasters, particularly flood.

More than 80 directors and staff from preschools, long day-care, family day-care, and before and after school care in the floodplain attended an all-day workshop. They benefitted from expert advice from the NSW State Emergency Service, NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW and NSW Police on how to better prepare for an emergency.

Workshop attendees learnt about the latest flood information, the considerations for looking after young children in a crisis, how to maintain communication with family and carers, and evacuation planning.

These workshops were an initiative of the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley Flood Risk Management Strategy, delivered as a partnership between Infrastructure NSW, the Australian Red Cross and the Early Childhood Education Directorate, NSW Department of Education.
