Barangaroo’s newest landmark opens to the public
Barangaroo has welcomed a new addition to its waterfront today with the official opening of Pier Pavilion, a bold and beautiful public space designed to bring people together on the edge of Sydney Harbour.
Emerging as the winning concept from a prestigious national design competition in 2020, the pavilion was selected from over 170 entries. Designed by acclaimed architects Besley and Spresser, the structure is a striking tribute to the surrounding land, sky, and sea.
A New Landmark of Design and Sustainability
The Pier Pavilion blends form and function with thoughtful, sustainable design elements that reflect the character of Sydney’s coastline.
Key features include:
- 85 sculptural columns reaching over 7-metres in height
- over 450,000 recycled Sydney rock oyster shells used in custom terrazzo cladding
- landscaped green roof planted with nearly 2,500 native species
- 7-metre wide roof oculus, framing views of the sky above
- 18-metre double-sided seating area, providing space for relaxation and connection.
Positioned as a central gathering space, the pavilion will host community events, performances, and everyday moments of connection. It also exemplifies the NSW Government’s vision for accessible, inclusive public spaces that support social and cultural life in the city.
