Powerhouse Parramatta showcases unique exhibition space door

Powerhouse Parramatta is set to become the first major NSW cultural institution to be established in Western Sydney and construction is progressing well.

The site features 7 large-scale exhibition spaces spread across two interconnected buildings. The largest of these is Exhibition Space 1, spanning over 2,000sqm and reaching 18-metres high. Exhibition Space 1 is the largest column-free exhibition space in Australia—its volume equivalent to 15 Olympic swimming pools

A standout feature is its super-sized mechanical hoisting door facing the Parramatta River. Measuring 56-metres long, 9-metres high, and weighing 136 tonnes, the glazed door was delivered in sections and assembled on-site using tower and mobile cranes. It establishes a direct link between the exhibition space and the public domain, ideal for large-scale programming and events.

Each section of the door includes 4 winches for vertical movement and docking pins for stability. Retractable blinds across the façade allow for light control during exhibitions.

Powerhouse Parramatta is nearing construction completion and is on track to open in late 2026
