The Cutaway Nears Completion with Striking Timber Sculptures Installed

The NSW Government's transformation of the Cutaway at Barangaroo has reached a significant milestone, with the installation of the first of 13 timber sculptural elements, marking the project’s 85% completion.

Delivered by Infrastructure NSW in collaboration with FDC Construction & Fitout and fjcstudio, the Cutaway is being redefined as Sydney’s premier cultural and event destination.

Designed through a creative partnership involving fjcstudio, Shannon Foster of Bangawarra, and artist Jake Nash, the 13 sculptural timber “trees” serve as the focal point of the design. Each sculpture stands 16-metres tall and consists of up to 115 timber pieces.

Beyond their striking appearance, these structures play a functional role—enhancing the venue’s acoustics through perforated plywood and integrated insulation. Inspired by the natural curves of the giba-gunya (rock shelter), the transformed Cutaway will provide a space that is both welcoming and culturally resonant.

Upon completion, it will elevate Barangaroo's status as a must-visit destination for both locals and tourists, hosting a diverse range of events, exhibitions, festivals, and installations.
